What is Confirmation?
Affirming the Faith in which you were raised

At the time of Baptism parents make the following promises for their children:

"As you bring your children to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:

to live with them among God's faithful people,

bring them to the word of God and the holy supper,

teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,

place in their hands the holy scriptures,

and nurture them in faith and prayer,

so that your children may learn to trust God,

proclaim Christ through word and deed,

care for others and the world God made,

and work for justice and peace."

As parents fulfill these promises with the help of sponsors and congregation, confirmation is a time of preperation when young people learn about the faith and prepare to take the responsibility of these promises for themselves. When they make their confirmation young people affirm the same promises their parents made at their baptisms.

Here at ORLC the time of Confirmation preperation and instruction takes place during 7th and 8th grade.

Affirmation of Faith

8th graders will make their Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday May 19, 2024 at our 9:30am worship service. Confirmation Sunday will always take place on Pentecost Sunday every year.

Class Schedule

Classes begin with a large group learning time with Pastor John, followed by small group conversations.  Lessons have been created based upon the kids questions about Faith, God, and the Bible.  In addition we have a handful of Faith @ Home night where kids will be asked to take the conversations home for the week in place of class.  Handout are provided below.  During Lent on Wendedays that students will help lead midweek lenten worship and then conclude with their small group.

Confirmation Project

Every confirmation student will be asked to do a project over the course of their two years.  Ideally, students should identify a project during their 7th grade year and begin their project at the start of their 8th grade year.  The purpose of the project is to choose something that reflects the students personality, interests and gifts that shares and expresses of deepens their faith.  See attached Project worksheet for more info and to submit a project idea.

Faith @ Home
10/25/23, 11/29/23, 1/17/24, 2/7/24, 5/1/24

Faith @ Home is new this year for confirmation.  5 weeks out of the year we will not have class on Wednesday night.  The purpose of this is 2 fold: to include more breaks in students busy scheudle, and to encoruage families to spend time togther talking about faith in the home.  Each of these five week will have a questions sheet with conversation questions, prayers, and blessings.  They will be easy to follow and use.  Students will be asked have these conversations at home as you see fit: around the dinner table with the whole family, with one on one before bed, after school sitting on the back patio drink lemonade or by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate.  It doesn't matter.  The goal is to normalize having conversations about faith and prayer in the home.  When completed students are asked to return the form signed by themselves and parent/adult stating they ahd the conversation.
